Local Dog Rescue One Tail at a Time Turns Chicago Pet Sitters Office Into New Adoption Center
Rescue group launches massive fundraiser to open the doors by August 1

CHICAGO, IL, June 3, 2015 – [www.onetail.org] One Tail at a Time (OTAT)–a Chicagoland dog rescue group that has rescued over 1,000 dogs since its founding in 2008–will open an Adoption Center at the site of Chicago Pet Sitters’ offices in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood on August 1, 2015.

“The synergy between the two organizations is a good one,” says Dana Dubriwny, owner of Chicago Pet Sitters. “One Tail at A Time, like Chicago Pet Sitters, started from the ground-up and works through grass-roots efforts. While OTAT gets the pups out of the shelter system, we can ensure they maintain a great quality of life through continued care beyond the adoption process.”

Chicago Pet Sitters has had a long history with One Tail at A Time. Billy, OTAT’s American Bulldog mascot, was a dog-walking client when the rescue group was just forming. Since then, Chicago Pet Sitters’ Manager, Jared Honn, adopted his beagle pup Bogart through OTAT, and thereafter joined the group’s associate board.

Dubriwny was previously on the board of another Chicago-based rescue group, and both Dubriwny and Honn are active in fostering adoptable dogs. “We work with several rescue groups in the city, and we will continue to do so,” states Dubriwny. “But we’ve had the opportunity and advantage to work closely with OTAT. We would love to see all of the rescues work together to help create a no-kill city, and OTAT is at the forefront of making that happen.”

OTAT began as a volunteer group, placing dogs in foster homes until they were adopted to families. The opening of the Adoption Center will allow the organization to scale up its operations and make a bigger impact in the Chicago region.

“More than 10 dogs per day are euthanized in Chicago shelters,” says Heather Owen, the group’s Executive Director. “We’ve been working in these shelters for seven years and we know these are great dogs who just need a chance. This is our opportunity to really give them a shot.”

Owen recently left her career as a litigation attorney to spearhead the project which will include a community meeting space, adoption room, 10 kennel suites and a 3,500-square-foot outdoor space where the dogs will socialize and meet potential adopters.

“I left a secure job to do this because I know in my heart that it’s what our community needs. If we can just showcase these dogs to our neighbors, we’re confident that canine euthanasia will be reduced in our shelters,” says Owen.

OTAT launched its fundraiser on May 13, hoping to raise $70,000 in 70 days to build out the facility in time for the grand opening on August 1. In just 24 hours, the group reached its first milestone of $25,000 raised. As of today, nearly halfway through the fundraiser, One Tail has attained $56,000 from its supporters.
